Azimut Yachts and Ferrari: Fly 72 backing the Ferrari Hypersail project
A new benchmark in offshore support emerges at the crossroads of yachting innovation and high‑speed engineering: Azimut Fly 72 x Ferrari Hypersail. Azimut Yachts serves as the technical and official yachting partner for the Ferrari Hypersail project, which is focused on ocean racing. The collaboration spans two key directions - onshore and offshore. On land, the Hypersail Operational Base at the Azimut shipyard in Livorno acts as the central hub; at sea, dedicated towing support is provided by a custom-built vessel engineered specifically for the demands of the racing prototype.

The custom tow boat was developed by Azimut’s technical department expressly for the initial tests of the prototype and subsequent test campaigns. The solution draws on Azimut’s long-standing engineering expertise, R&D capabilities and innovations in marine construction - this very expertise enables the team to meet the unconventional requirements of a high-performance racing project.
Azimut and Ferrari: on the Hypersail Project
“We are the only brand in the industry with an independent R&D department focused exclusively on developing solutions that don’t yet exist on the market. It’s a choice driven by an insatiable hunger for progress, the same progress that has resulted in our joining forces with the visionary Ferrari Hypersail project. We are proud to be part of this challenging endeavour that generates new knowledge and inspiration for the yachting world.” - Andrea Antichi, General Manager at Azimut Yachts
“The Ferrari Hypersail project was born out of the desire to create something never seen before, bringing Ferrari’s racing DNA to the world of ocean sailing yachts. We are delighted to have Azimut Yachts on board; their contribution to the custom tow boat project and the Livorno Operational Base will support a series of key activities during the project’s development and testing phase.” - Lorenzo Giorgetti, Chief Racing Revenue Officer at Ferrari
Racing Dynamics and Engineering Solutions: Fly 72 Powering the Prototype to 30 Knots

Engineers faced a mission defined by racing parameters: to accelerate the prototype to approximately 30 knots during the first trials- without mast or sails - and to support the lift-off dynamics and hydrofoil flight. To meet this challenge, the Fly 72 platform was adapted to stringent power-to-weight requirements. The carbon programme reduced the vessel’s weight by six tonnes, while the integration of 4,000 HP doubled the model’s power output in this exclusive configuration for Ferrari Hypersail. This level of customisation was made possible by the team’s experience and Azimut’s pioneering use of carbon fibre.
To guarantee a secure connection with the prototype, the hull was equipped with a special tow post: its design is engineered to handle extreme static and dynamic loads and has passed rigorous strength and structural tests. The project leverages Azimut’s full-spectrum expertise in naval architecture, structural and systems engineering, as well as premium interior design and fit-out solutions.
From Testing to Global Events: Fly 72 as the Mobile Operational Base for Ferrari Hypersail
The onboard layout has been tailored to the specific requirements of Enrico Voltolini’s team to maximise efficiency and ease of operations during test phases. In later stages, the Azimut Fly 72 will serve as crew accommodation and support high-end VIP hospitality services. The vessel accompanies the Ferrari Hypersail project at every critical milestone - from initial trials to major international events worldwide.
